The Super League Resurrected: New Open Format and Free TV Broadcasts

The Super League has just won a significant legal battle: this Thursday, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled in favor of the project against UEFA and FIFA.

The consequences of this decision are enormous: any potential sanctions imposed by both organizations regarding clubs and players involved in the creation of a new competition have been deemed illegal.

« The rules of FIFA and UEFA regarding prior authorization for interclub football competitions, such as the Super League, violate Union law. Indeed, they are contrary to competition law and the free provision of services. The rules of FIFA and UEFA, subjecting the creation of any new interclub football competition project, such as the Super League, to their prior authorization and prohibiting clubs and players from participating in it under penalty of sanctions, are illegal. Indeed, the powers of FIFA and UEFA are not framed by any criteria ensuring their transparency, objectivity, non-discrimination, and proportionality. Similarly, the rules that give FIFA and UEFA exclusive control over the commercial exploitation of the rights related to these competitions are likely to restrict competition, given their importance for the media, consumers, and viewers in the Union, » reads an official statement.

In Spain, the press reveals the new project. The Super League is envisaged for the 2025/2026 season, and contrary to the idea of a closed competition, it will be open to an extended number of participants, with around 60 clubs already approached. Moreover, it is planned that the revenues generated by this competition will be distributed more equitably, marking a desire to promote a fairer distribution of event-related earnings according to Mundo Deportivo.
