PSG’s Goalkeeper Situation: Safonov to Challenge Donnarumma
Matveï Safonov is set to join PSG to challenge Gianluigi Donnarumma for the goalkeeper position, with no clear number one expected at the beginning of next season, according to L’Équipe.
PSG is once again stirring up its goalkeeper competition. Following the likes of Buffon and Navas, comes the new threat, Safonov. According to L’Équipe, PSG’s management has informed the three goalkeepers under contract, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Arnau Tenas, and Matveï Safonov, that there will be no hierarchy at the start of the next season.
The new Russian goalkeeper for PSG, who has unofficially signed from FK Krasnodar for €20 million, has received the message. However, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Arnau Tenas may not be thrilled.
According to L’Équipe, Donnarumma feels that « this decision resembles a step back of three seasons, when he first arrived at PSG and was initially placed in competition with Keylor Navas. »
However, the sports daily points out that PSG « has invested significantly in Safonov, whose characteristics are quite similar to those of Donnarumma, and Paris was not sold to him as a club where he would sit on the bench. »
For Arnau Tenas, the situation is different. Luis Enrique counts on him for next season, but there are some doubts within the PSG squad about his ability to perform at the highest level. Therefore, he could be loaned out.
