The revamped Club World Cup, scheduled from June 15 to July 13, has drawn criticism from players due to its congested calendar, which many consider overwhelming. However, club executives, including Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, hold a different view.
Al-Khelaïfi Promotes the Club World Cup as a Global Opportunity
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi is a staunch defender of the new version of the Club World Cup, seeing it as a major opportunity for global football, and particularly for PSG. According to the PSG president, the competition could bring significant benefits, including financial support for French football. He believes these benefits will have a positive impact on clubs and national infrastructures, making the tournament a valuable addition to the football calendar.
« It Will Help Other French Clubs… »
« There are challenges, of course, but the basis of the tournament is a good thing, » Al-Khelaïfi explained. « This is not a brand-new tournament; it replaces an existing one. It won’t add much extra strain on players either, as it only takes place every four years and involves a small number of teams (32 compared to 7 in the past). Additionally, a large portion of the revenue will be designated for ‘solidarity,’ benefiting the entire European football system, including other French clubs. »
While the congested schedule remains a point of contention for players, club leaders like Al-Khelaïfi view the new Club World Cup as a chance to strengthen the influence and financial standing of football, both at the international level and within domestic leagues.
In this sense, the competition is seen as a win not only for the participating teams but also for the broader football ecosystem, potentially offering much-needed financial support to other French clubs as well.
