Ousmane Dembélé has faced significant criticism for his lack of goals since the start of the season. However, according to the CIES Football Observatory, the player’s influence is real, even if it’s less noticeable than scoring goals.
This week, the CIES Football Observatory published a new study ranking players creating chances worldwide during the current season (with at least 630 minutes of play). Ousmane Dembélé, the 26-year-old forward who joined Paris Saint-Germain this summer from FC Barcelona, occupies the first place in this ranking. His PSG teammate, 24-year-old forward Kylian Mbappé, is in the 4th position.
This information highlights the significant contribution of Dembélé and Mbappé in creating chances, showcasing their impact on their team’s offensive play. These rankings can provide interesting insights into the individual performance of players in specific aspects of the game.
« The creation index is calculated by adding the number of key passes (for chances) and expected assists (according to the danger of created chances) per 90 minutes and weighting the result by the sporting level of the matches played (as a percentage deviation from the overall average). Only players who have played at least 630 minutes in the league for the same team during the current season are considered, » writes the CIES.
