Is Mbappé Aiming to Become a Playmaker at PSG?
L’Équipe discusses the shortcomings in PSG’s gameplay since the start of the season, where attackers are struggling to connect, and Kylian Mbappé appears to be taking it upon himself to address the issue.
A few days ago, L’Équipe reported that Luis Enrique had experimented with Ousmane Dembélé as an attacking midfielder. Since the departures of Neymar and Messi, and in the absence of Kang-In Lee, PSG has been lacking in this playmaking role.
Could Mbappé fill that role? Frustrated by the lack of service in depth, Kylian Mbappé seems increasingly inclined to drop back and take on a creative playmaker role, as seen in the match against Newcastle, where he was involved in distributing the ball.
However, according to L’Équipe, this might not be the ideal solution. « This role suits him even less since he doesn’t have the technical finesse of a Neymar or a Verratti, » points out L’Équipe. Nevertheless, other forwards have successfully reinvented themselves as playmakers in the past.
