In its first match of the season against FC Lorient, Paris Saint-Germain set a record in Ligue 1 by completing over 1,000 passes during the game. Despite this accomplishment, the team was unable to secure a victory and ended up with a draw (0-0).
Luis Enrique’s playing philosophy is already evident in the French league. Under the guidance of their new Spanish coach, PSG has adopted a possession-based style of play, which was clearly visible in the match against Lorient at Parc des Princes.
While the result ended in a draw on the first matchday of Ligue 1, Parisians showcased their mastery by completing a total of 1,002 passes in a game they largely dominated.
With this achievement, PSG becomes the first team to surpass the 1,000-pass mark in a match since Opta, the statistics provider, started analyzing the competition (since the 2006-2007 season). Additionally, they managed to regain possession of the ball in the opponent’s final third 11 times during the first half, a feat that hadn’t been seen in over a year.
